Henry Charles Séné (1889-1961) "Market Scene" Oil on canvas. Dimensions without frame Height 38.5 cm - Length 46 cm. Dimensions with frame Height 51 cm - Length 59 cm. Henry Charles Séné studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Châlons-sur-Marne and then, from 1906, with Fernand Cormon at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in Paris, where he received an honourable mention in 1913, a silver medal in 1922, the Rosa Bonheur Prize in 1924, a gold medal in 1932, and a medal of honour in 1958. Recognised as an Orientalist and animal painter, Séné favours the world of reality, relying on the "modern vision" imposed by the Impressionists. Like them, he breaks free from ancestral pictorial standards to invent a new painting technique that prioritises the "instantaneous impression" in painting over the construction of the mind.
