Gerda wegener (1886-1940) Drawing in bold pencil and ink on tracing. Elegant umbrella, costume project. Signed lower right. With gilded wooden frame and under glass. Dimensions without frame: 28x20cm. Dimensions with frame: 52x42cm. Good general condition, paper wrinkling. * born into a french family that emigrated to denmark in the eighteenth century, gerda marie frederikke gottlieb was born in hammelev, near the city of grenå. In 1902, she entered the school of fine arts in copenhagen3. In 1904 she married lili elbe, who had not yet begun her transition and was known as a painter under the name einar wegener. Gerda wegener participated in the charlottenborg spring exhibition until 1909. The couple became friends with sculptor rudolph tegner. The couple traveled to italy, england and france, where they settled in paris, at the champ de mars, from 1912. She exhibited her portraits of women at the salons d'automne, the indépendants and the salon des humoristes, designing stained glass windows, mosaics and facades of luxury boutiques. She also exhibited at the société des amis des arts de bordeaux from 1926 to 1930. She published her drawings in many humorous newspapers of the time, from la vie parisienne, to fantasio, le rire, la baïonnette, or in je sais tout, politiken and in luxury fashion magazines such as the journal des dames et des modes, la guirlande, etc. His drawings that depict the beauty of women are sometimes very daring. She also signs several advertising creations. From press illustration gerda wegener quickly switches to book illustration. First with a few vignettes and ornaments, then, responding to the demand of publishers of what became, between the two wars, the golden age of the illustrated book, with large compositions printed out of text. Thus she delivered 12 plates for the tales of my father the jars (1919), before giving for the book of the bibliophile.
