Tableau Femmes - female nude A81 "the two friends" - Gouache on paper marked with the stamp "atelier Gabriel SPAT" (1980 - 1967) Dimensions. Frame 61cm X 75cm. Very good condition. Reference finds = P055. Gabriel Spat was born in 1890 in Chișinău, a city then located in the Russian Empire, now the capital of Moldova. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in art, and it was in Paris, in the early 1910s, that he decided to settle, drawn by the artistic effervescence of Montparnasse. There, he mingled with avant-garde circles, notably La Ruche, a famous collective studio that hosted major figures such as Chagall, Soutine, and Modigliani. Spat is part of the movement of the School of Paris, an informal current that brings together many foreign artists who came to Paris to develop their art. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he remained faithful to figurative painting, influenced by post-impressionism, but infused with a great personal sensitivity. He painted scenes of urban life, intimate interiors, portraits, markets, cafés, and anonymous couples, with soft lines, gentle tones, and a poetry of the everyday. Some critics liken him to Pierre Bonnard or Édouard Vuillard for his warm and deeply human perspective. His work, marked by a naturalistic touch and a gentle melancholy, is also punctuated by experiences in sculpture and engraving. During World War II, as a Jewish artist, Spat was forced to flee. He first hid in the south of France, and in 1945, he arrived in the United States, where he settled in New York and got married. The following year, the Carroll Carstairs gallery in New York held an exhibition of his watercolours; several other exhibitions followed in the United States and Paris. Gabriel Spat remained true to his poetic and tender vision of humanity until his death in 1967.
