Set of 2 MCM table lamps: Unique recycled pieces made from vases by Ditmar Urbach Keramik – Czech Republic.

These two vase lamps have been newly constructed from original ceramic vases by Ditmar Urbach, formerly in Czechoslovakia/now the Czech Republic. Ditmar Urbach is one of the most important ceramic manufacturers in Central Europe during the 20th century. The company produced high-quality ceramics in Teplitz-Schönau (now Teplice, Czech Republic) and was focused on international export. Particularly in the post-war period, Ditmar Urbach became a leading name in modern and expressive ceramics with characteristic glazes. The vases used here feature a typical and minimalist design: an angular yet rounded shape with a cream-coloured base and organic green drip marks. The conversion into lamps is carried out with complete care to preserve the original objects: • no drilling • no irreversible modifications • reversible construction with a high-quality brass plate and a threaded casing • the original substance and collectible value of the vase are preserved. The lamp base is secured inside the vase with a cork stopper and a clip. The vase has been weighted with sand for stability. The opening of the vase is sealed with a high-quality brass plate, the threaded rod has a brass covering, and the base is black. As a pair, the lamps create a striking presence - placed symmetrically on a sideboard or console, or as a subtle contrast in modern interiors. The green cylindrical lampshades (30 X 25 cm) made of thicker inner fabric echo the colours of the glaze and produce a warm, soft light. One of the two vases had a small crack at the top of the opening, which has been repaired with gold paint using the Japanese Kintsugi technique. This is not a flaw. One of the lampshades has two seams due to the fabric cutting, which have been concealed with a thin strip of green velvet. Since both seams are at the back of the lampshade, they are not visually noticeable. Height of the vases without the bases: 23 cm, total height of each lamp: 52 cm.
