Monumental architectural sideboard in ebonized wood, Belgium, 1990s

The large cabinet is built as a strongly horizontal composition, with four wide drawers above four substantial panelled doors. Each drawer front is visually divided into two sections, creating the appearance of eight smaller drawers and giving the upper part of the facade a strong geometric rhythm. A wide projecting top runs across the full length of the piece, while the sides are constructed with an open geometric grid that gives the cabinet a distinctly architectural character. The four door fronts are framed by deep moulded sections, creating a pronounced sense of depth across the facade. Small square details on the drawer fronts provide a restrained contrast to the dark finish. Particular attention has been given to the construction and proportions. The cabinet is exceptionally substantial and weighs 201 kg, reflecting the heavy materials and high level of workmanship used throughout. The ebonized finish leaves the grain of the wood visible and gives the cabinet a restrained, graphic appearance. Despite its considerable dimensions, the repetitive four-part structure creates a balanced and highly composed facade. The sideboard originates from a private interior in Knokke, Belgium, furnished with high-quality international design pieces. Its unusual dimensions and construction suggest that it was probably made to order for the original interior rather than produced as a standard series piece. A distinctive and exceptionally well-made piece of architectural cabinet furniture. The architectural vocabulary shows a clear affinity with the furniture designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Impeccable condition, presenting virtually as new, with no notable signs of wear or use.
