Pair of armchairs in Louis XVI style, Napoleonic III period, 19th century – France

Exquisite pair of armchairs in the Louis XVI style, made during the Napoleonic era (1852-1870) in France. Simple structure, richly carved wood, upholstered in taupe brown chenille with decorative nails. They feature a contrast between the curve of the armrest and the straight, square backrest. The entire wooden structure is fluted, enhancing the overall appearance, in addition to the flower-shaped carving between the legs and the armrest. Very special due to their shape and large size, they are truly exquisite and refined. With a classic and timeless style, these armchairs can be placed in both living rooms and bedrooms. According to some authors, the Louis XVI style has a "feminine" tendency and should even have been named "Marie-Antoinette." It contrasts with the Louis XV style through its simplicity, showcasing the rigor of geometric shapes and straight lines, inspired directly by classical architecture. It is characterised by lightness, harmony, and proportion, setting aside the heaviness and excess of previous styles. It stands out as a more discreet and elegant style than its predecessor.
