Former davy miner's lamp, glass schott gen mainz jenaer glas. German miner's lamp. 19th. Magnificent 19th century miner's lamp in brass and glass schott gen mainz jenaer glas. The lamp certainly comes from germany. On the glass it says g20 schott gen mainz jenaer glas. Engraved 125 inside. It was later electrified. In very good condition. Height with hook: 33 cm - 12.99 " Base diameter: 9.5cm - 3.74" Weight: 1.3 kg. The davy lamp is a fuel lamp whose flame is surrounded by a fine mesh. Without this mesh, the flame could have ignited the mine's gases, or dust (grey or dust blow). Indeed, the flames do not pass through the fine fences. The metal absorbs heat from the flame. So cooled near the fence, the flame cannot pass through it. Humphry davy and george stephenson were the one who defyed the concept of safety lamps in 1815: a very tight mesh metal sieve prevented the spread of a flame from the inside to the outside of the lamp.
