Iconic and sublime Topo desk lamp by Joe Colombo for Stilnovo. Italy 1970. Very rare model, first edition and all chrome, this is not a reissue. One visible difference: metal joints. The reissues are made of plastic. Long articulated arm in two parts, which attaches to the desk or a shelf. This system allows you not to invade your space. The arm carries a reflector that tilts up and down and rotates 360°. Openings on the top allow heat from the bulb to escape. The switch is located on the back. Excellent condition, with a few minor signs of wear, nothing significant, see photos. Topo is a design object with retro charm, inspired by 1960s sports cars. The slits on the metal shade recall the air intakes of period vehicles, while the shape of the shade reflects the housing for the classic E27 bulb, a subtle balance between functionality and aesthetics (Source: Stilnovo website). Joe Colombo: Joe Colombo studied painting until 1949 at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and then architecture until 1954 at the Polytechnic University of Milan. In the early 1950s, he joined the Nuclear Diffa (nuclear painting movement) founded by Enrico Baj and Sergio D'Angelo. He completed several decoration and scenography projects during this decade. After the death of his father in 1959, he had to take over the family business, which he left in 1961. His career as a designer truly began in 1962 when he opened his own design studio in Milan. With his brother, Gianni Colombo, he created the Acrilica lamp, and in 1963, he designed the Elda armchair. During the 1960s, he collaborated with major design houses such as Kartell, Zanotta, and O-Luce, and was awarded several times with the Compasso d'Oro and the Premier Design International Award. He died prematurely at the age of 41.
