Danish Modern Stoneware Table Lamp by Michael Andersen, Marianne Starck, 1960s

This Danish Modern stoneware table lamp is model 6207 by Michael Andersen & Søn of Bornholm, a Marianne Starck design, with a new shade. The lamp keeps its original socket and has been newly wired for U.S. use with a gold-toned cord. International plug customization is available at no charge. A new clear shade carrier in the Danish style holds the new off-white pleated chintz shade, also made in Denmark. The listed height includes the shade. The neck rises as a long, slender taper, then flares at the foot into a low, square base with softened, outswept corners. The glaze follows the form. A deep, finely mottled brown covers the neck and runs down each corner, while each side of the base opens into a broad, almond-shaped panel of flecked oatmeal. Where the two glazes meet, the brown feathers softly into the lighter one, a reminder that every lamp was glazed by hand. The underside is impressed with the model number 6207 and the factory's three-herring shield. The lamp also keeps its original circular MA&S paper label, with 6207 written by hand in ink. Model 6207 has been catalogued at Danish auction as a Marianne Starck design, and some examples carry her incised MS initials. About Michael Andersen & Søn Michael Andersen & Søn dates to 1890, when Jens Michael Andersen took over an existing pottery in Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm. From 1931 its wares carried a shield of three herrings taken from Rønne's coat of arms. The German-born ceramicist Marianne Starck trained in Hamburg and joined the firm as art director in 1955, staying until it was sold in 1993. Under her direction the Rønne workshop produced some of the most distinctive ceramics of Danish Modern design which are collected worldwide today.
