Silver-plated candelabra by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall, Sweden 1960s

An elegant three-armed candelabra in silver-plated metal, designed by Gunnar Ander for Ystad-Metall in the Swedish modernist idiom of the 1960s. The piece has a sculptural, fluid silhouette: three slender, rod-like elements are welded together at a central junction, flowing upward into three tapered, trumpet-shaped bobèches and downward into three splayed legs that form the base. It holds three standard taper candles and is in excellent vintage condition, showing only very slight wear consistent with age. One of the legs is stamped with the maker’s marks: YMA (the Ystad-Metall hallmark), EX PR NS (indicating extra-plated nickel silver), and MADE IN SWEDEN. Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish architect and designer best known for his refined and often colourful contributions to modernist lighting and decorative arts during the mid-20th century. A versatile designer, Ander worked across multiple disciplines, including architecture, furniture, glass, and lighting, and became particularly well known for his work with the Swedish lighting company Ystad-Metall. Ander’s long association with Ystad-Metall lasted until the company ceased operations in 1969. His legacy lies in the distinctive body of work he produced during Sweden’s golden era of design—pieces that are still sought after by collectors and design historians for their quality, creativity, and enduring Scandinavian character.
