Pair of Mahogany Side Tables with X-shaped Legs. French Work. Circa.

Each side table features a rectangular mahogany top with moulded corners, supported by an elegant X-shaped base: two pairs of crossed saber legs in the manner of curule chairs, joined by a turned stretcher and finished with tapered feet. The warm reddish tone of the mahogany highlights the purity of the silhouette. This curule base, inherited from Antiquity and revived during the Directory and the Empire, was happily adopted by French decorators of the 1940s, who appreciated these refined neoclassical lines in carefully varnished dark woods. Condition report: Good overall condition. Mahogany with a warm patina showing some marks and lightening from use on the tops, structure is sound and stable. An elegant and functional pair, suitable as framing for a sofa or as small side tables on either side of a bed.
