We are pleased to offer an exceptional set of three embroidered wall hangings, handmade in French Indochina (Tonkin region, present-day Vietnam) around 1930. These works demonstrate remarkable textile know-how and great finesse of execution, characteristic of artisanal productions of the colonial era. The set consists of a large central tapestry accompanied by two narrower side panels. The main scene intensely depicts a tiger chasing an axis deer in the heart of a lush landscape composed of bamboo, shrubs and wooded reliefs. In the background, a bucolic scene illustrates rural life: peasants plowing a rice field with the help of an ox, with a traditional village visible on the horizon. The embroideries, made of silk on cotton satin, offer a remarkable chromatic richness and subtlety of details. Each hanging is framed with elegant embroidered floral friezes, reinforcing the decorative aspect and stylistic coherence of the whole. Dimensions: Main hanging: H 186 cm X W 158 cm X D 4 cm Side panels (x2): H 108 cm X W 40 cm X D 4 cm Condition: In good general condition. Some slight defects visible in the photographs, consistent with the age of the set. A rare piece on the market, both for the quality of the embroidery and its iconography, this set constitutes a precious testimony to Indochinese textile art of the early 20th century.
