Lovely pair of hand candle holders, representing an open dragon mouth in earthenware by desvres, hand-painted rouen decoration. Sets by the french designer georges martel. Period: xxth century. Dimensions: height: 18.5cm X width: 11cm. Signature: desvres under the cup. In 1900, georges martel known as "géo martel" bought from gaëtan level a ceramic factory located in desvres, specializing in the reproduction of old pieces (rouen, delft, nevers). The first world war led to the cessation of earthenware production, because most of the staff as well as georges martel himself were mobilized. It was not until the intervention of madame martel-legrand in the course of 1916 that the factory was restarted. Although georges martel is recognized throughout the world, the war has changed his commercial network and new directions are needed. It is necessary to evolve the production, mainly for the french territory, by creating new decorations of "art nouveau" style, new forms, while continuing the reproduction of old earthenware, which has made its reputation. To maintain his business, he then offers original collections to his customers every year. In 1927, he worked in parallel with ironwork workshops, where the form and decorations were made by hand. Unfortunately, the economic, social and political problems of our time got the better of the factory, which closed its doors definitively in april 2003. However, the earthenware sign is still one of the many decorations in the town of desvres.
