At the beginning of their creation, these dolls representing little girls were small toys for children, before being sold as souvenirs for tourists. Their production then diversified in terms of size, shape and decoration. In the past, there were several words to designate japanese dolls, depending on their place of production (kogesu, kiboko, deko, etc.). At a meeting of craftsmen and collectors in 1940, it was decided that the word kokeshi (こけし?), written in hiragana, would henceforth serve as the standard name.
