Pair of ceiling lamps by Helena Tynell for Limburg, 1970s

A pair of ceiling lights designed by Helena Tynell for Limburg in the 1970s, a project that explores the expressive potential of glass through a three-dimensional surface capable of transforming light into matter. The aggregation of spherical volumes creates a diffuser with a strong sculptural presence, where transparency, reflections and refractions become an integral part of the composition. Made of amber-coloured moulded glass, the diffusers are defined by a dense arrangement of hemispherical elements of varying sizes covering the entire surface. The internal structure is almost entirely concealed, allowing the glass to become the true protagonist of the design: when unlit, the richness of the texture and the warm amber tone of the glass are revealed, while once illuminated the diffuser comes alive with reflections and subtle tonal variations, diffusing a soft and enveloping light. The understated metal base discreetly enhances the visual lightness of the composition. Among Helena Tynell's most representative designs for Limburg, these ceiling lights embody the experimentation with glass that characterised Northern European design in the 1970s, combining material innovation with formal clarity.
