Pair of small wedgwood jasperware boxes with a decoration rotating in relief of antique white scenes on a dark blue background. Dimensions: h 5.5 d 7 cm. Two crippled gins on the edge of each box, invisible once the lid is placed. A lid with a hair. Signed wedgwood. Nineteenth century. Englishman josiah wedgwood – inventor of jasper porcelain – left a lasting imprint on the porcelain landscape to this day. This type of soft porcelain, also known as "jasperware", laid the foundation for english porcelain or ceramics, a bastion of staffordshire. Wedgwood did not follow the teachings of german and russian manufactures in his further development of ceramics, but developed his body according to the derivation of the mineral jasper. Wedgwood's jasperware was one of the exceptional gifts from the british crown. The noble pieces are still found today in the salons and bedrooms of all the royal houses of europe. However, strictly speaking, jasperware belongs to the sandstone group. He used clay as a shaping mass, heavy feldspar as a flux, and flint for body stability. In keeping with his time and the state of the art, the decorative colors of jasper's soft porcelain consisted of metal oxides, mainly cobalt for the color blue.
