Superb piece of traditional Indian craftsmanship: articulated Kumkum (or Sindoor) box made of patinated solid bronze, topped with a stylised peacock (Mayura). Object name: Box / container for sacred powders (Kumkum, Sindoor or Haldi) with compartments. Tikka. Origins: India (traditional craftsmanship from Rajasthan or South India). Traditional function: Used during Hindu rituals (Pūjā) or for daily ritual makeup. The central threaded rod, topped here with a peacock (Mayura, a symbol of beauty and grace in Indian mythology), locks all the compartments (in the shape of a petal or drop) when tightened, and allows them to open like a flower when unscrewed. 2.
