Turkey, Kars region – 1970s. This Kars carpet, dated from the 1970s, powerfully illustrates the lasting influence of Caucasian traditions on the weavings of Eastern Anatolia. The composition is centred on two large overlapping octagonal medallions, typical of the Caucasian repertoire, each containing a stylised star inscribed within a geometric cruciform shape. The field, in a warm brick red tone, contrasts with the blue-green and ivory medallions, creating a marked and harmonious chromatic balance. The borders, particularly rich, are animated by a regular succession of star motifs and scalloped friezes, enhancing the graphic and rhythmic character of the whole. The palette, composed of muted reds, deep blues, greens, and beiges, evokes traditional dyes and gives the carpet a strong decorative presence. Made of hand-knotted wool, this carpet reflects solid craftsmanship and a modern adaptation of ancient patterns.
