Pairs of large boxes with lid, standing, in lithographed tin, made at the tin factory in wed, j. Bekkers & son, dordrecht (holland). Late XIX th. With rich golden décor on a cobalt blue background. Each of the two boxes has two scenes depicted in a medallion a reproduction of a well-known painting -the milkmaid by johannes vermeer and a noble house probably from a dutch painting. These boxes are in an ancient state, with signs of age and minor defects, stamped wed: j bekkers & zoon. Dordrecht (holland) Size: Diameter: 20.50 cm. Height: 45 cm. In 1824, jacobus bekkers opened a small tinsmith shop with a store in dordrecht. At first, it was mainly household items that he made and sold in his shop. Between 1840 and 1850, bekkers began to laquer and paint his tinsmithing, not only for decoration but also to protect it from oxidation. His exhibited work was crowned with success in london and received a medal and diploma. In 1884, the first tin printing press in the netherlands was installed in the company to provide a lithograph in one go to decorate the boxes. It was now able to supply large quantities of cans to companies for the packaging of tea, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, cigars, tobacco and pastries, among others. The wed house.
