Teodora chair by Ettore Sottsass for Vitra, Switzerland, 1986

An iconic Teodora chair designed in 1986 by Ettore Sottsass and produced by Vitra in Switzerland. This striking piece represents a mature moment in Sottsass’ postmodern practice, where radical form, symbolism, and refined production converge. The Teodora chair is defined by its bold architectural composition. The laminated wooden structure is articulated through strong vertical planes and horizontal bases, finished in a distinctive graphic pattern that emphasizes surface as a communicative element. In contrast, the curved, moulded perspex backrest introduces transparency and softness, creating a deliberate tension between opacity and lightness, solidity and immateriality. The chair reads as both furniture and constructed sign — a core principle in Sottsass’ thinking. Rather than seeking visual neutrality or ergonomic invisibility, the Teodora chair asserts presence and meaning. It reflects the postmodern belief that design is a cultural language, capable of expressing emotion, narrative, and ideology. Produced by Vitra with great precision, the chair stands as a collectible design object and a clear statement of late-20th-century experimental furniture.
