Asparagus plate in earthenware – acanthus and shells – around 1900

Antique asparagus plate in barbotine, with a generously moulded relief decoration. Seven white asparagus spears occupy the centre of the plate, their finely crafted tips enhanced by a beautiful deep violet. They stand out against two bright turquoise reserves, while the rim, in shades of pinkish beige and brown, displays a rich decoration of acanthus leaves, scrolls, and shells. Typical of the large French barbotine productions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this model is particularly known in the production of Orchies and can be found in various colour and mark variations. This example does not bear a stamp on the reverse, only a small sign painted in black. In good antique condition, with a beautiful shine to the glazes and well-preserved reliefs. Age-related crazing is visible throughout, along with small traces, stains, and marks of time, as well as some wear and minor defects around the edge (see photos). Diameter: 25 cm. Turquoise, mauve, and pinkish earth: an unexpected palette that gives this over-a-century-old barbotine an astonishing modernity.
