Large sculptural root wood coffee table – circa 1970
An impressive vintage coffee table, made from a large, heavy piece of solid root wood. The natural form of the tree almost entirely defines the design: a wide, irregular top with organic edges rests on gnarled, branching root forms. Openings, knots, cracks, hollows and protruding parts have not been hidden but made part of the piece. The top has been carefully levelled and smoothly finished, while the original contours have been preserved. The exact wood species has not been determined with certainty. The warm grain, high density and exceptional weight suggest a heavy tropical hardwood; without further documentation we describe it as solid root wood rather than specifically as teak. This type of free-form furniture became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, when designers and craftsmen increasingly worked with tree roots and solid tree sections. A piece on the boundary between functional object and sculpture, looking different from every angle. A powerful centrepiece in a living room, beautiful with low sofas, soft fabrics, natural stone and calm colours. Particularly suited to an organic modern, brutalist, wabi-sabi, rustic modern or minimalist interior, and a strong contrast in a sleek modern space. Good vintage condition with signs of use consistent with age and use. Natural drying cracks, fissures, knots, openings and irregularities inherent to root wood; some older stabilised or filled areas. Exceptionally heavy and solid.
