Small antique Chinese Kang table in solid carved elm, from northern China, early 20th century. Originally, this type of table was designed to be placed on a Kang, a heated platform serving as a living, resting, and reception space. Its low height and balanced proportions cater to specific daily uses: tea, writing, games, or meals. The solid top features beautiful traditional joinery and a warm patina, marked by time and successive use. The openwork base is finely carved with stylised geometric patterns, characteristic of classic Chinese furniture, evoking continuity and harmony. These cutouts provide a great visual lightness while maintaining excellent stability. Elm, a dense and robust wood, was particularly valued for its longevity and ability to develop a natural patina. Signs of wear, variations in hue, and micro-marks testify to the authenticity of the piece, with no excessive restoration, respecting the original material. Today, this Kang table fits perfectly into a contemporary or eclectic interior: as a coffee table, side table, or display for objects or sculptures, it brings a presence that is both understated, sculptural, and rich in history. A piece of character, blending function, aesthetics, and memory, ideal for enthusiasts of antique Chinese furniture with strong personality.
