An Art Nouveau style wall lamp from Poland from the 1970s is an example of craftsmanship, where the solid, oval base and body are made of brass with a warm, matte shade. Subtly curved, decorative applications placed above the mounting refer to plant motifs characteristic of Art Nouveau – smoothly flowing, softly undulating lines. The matte glass shade, with a slightly satin surface and off-white colour, widens downwards, diffusing the light and bringing out the noble tone of the metal. The finish of the lamp is emphasised by visible mounting screws, and the patina and minor abrasions on the brass and fine scratches on the shade are a natural, vintage testimony of the era. Condition: very good – slight patina on the brass, delicate usage scratches on the glass, without affecting the integrity of the construction. The form of this lamp, full of soft, S-shaped lines and historicising details, carries the voice of Polish 1970s, when inspirations from Art Nouveau were a way to subtly dialogue with the past. The surface of the brass, muted by time, seems to tell of the glow of homes it introduced not abundance, but rather refined, nostalgic decorativeness. The glass shade, giving off diffused light, recalls evenings when light was meant to soften the home space, creating a soft penumbra on the wall. The lamp can be paired with a velvet-upholstered sofa or a wooden console with bent legs to emphasise its ornamental pedigree. It works well against a wall in a subdued colour – white with a touch of grey or warm celadon will bring out the matte tone of the brass and the satin of the glass. It is worth combining it with mirrors in Art Nouveau frames or small ceramics with flowing shapes to create an interior with a slightly collector's, artistic character. Mid-century modern style, eclectic retro apartments and spaces full of classic references are its natural setting.
