Handwoven oriental Qashqai nomadic rug, 1920s

This hand-woven, long nomadic Qashqai rug was made in Iran during the 1920s. Naturally dyed in shades of green and beige. The central point of the rug is a five-piece, symmetrical medallion. The rug features geometric and floral motifs. Often referred to as a Qashqai runner, it is a type of rug woven by the nomadic Qashqai tribes of southern Iran, particularly around Shiraz. Like other Qashqai rugs, nomadic longitudinal rugs often showcase geometric patterns such as rhombuses, rectangles, hexagons, and nature-inspired motifs like stylised trees, flowers, and animal figures. Boteh motifs, a pattern resembling a drop or a small pine tree, also appear frequently. Due to their length, the patterns on longitudinal rugs are typically arranged parallel to the long edge. This can include repeating stripes of patterns or a single, continuous motif running the length of the rug. Qashqai carpets are characterised by their vibrant colours, traditionally obtained from natural dyes, which provide them with a natural depth and durability. Like all Qashqai carpets, the long carpets are hand-woven, making each piece unique. The use of symmetrical knots, specifically the Persian or Senneh knot, ensures precision in the reproduction of patterns and high durability. High-quality wool is employed, which is usually soft and dense, making the carpet both durable and pleasant to the touch. Due to their durability, they are well-suited for high-traffic areas. These carpets express the traditions and craftsmanship of the Qashqai tribes, reflecting their nomadic lifestyle, beliefs, history, tribal legends, and closeness to nature.
