Central European pine commode with original green paint – Tyrol, circa 1890

Rustic three-drawer pine commode, polychromed in green and originating from the Tyrolean-Central European tradition, dated around 1890. A piece of popular domestic furniture, halfway between a peasant bedroom commode and a main storage unit, representative of Alpine and Bohemian rural furniture from the late 19th century. In rural homes of the Alps and Bohemia, the painted commode was the main piece of furniture in the marital bedroom: it held the family's few personal items on top, while textiles, winter clothing, and the trousseau were stored inside. Green paint was common in the Tyrolean and Bavarian regions, where it is associated with local wood and 19th-century domestic decoration. It is constructed from solid pine boards, featuring a façade with three moulded drawers and sculpted side pilasters. The original hardware — hanging wrought iron ring handles and square brass keyholes — is intact.
