English school of the eighteenth century. Full-length portrait of robert hampden-trevor (1706-1783)" This portrait is that of robert hampden-trevor eldest son of thomas trévor's 2nd marriage. Robert pursued a career as a diplomat and was sent to the united provinces as ambassador. In 1759 he was appointed postmaster general. Another portrait of him painted by gainsborough, confirms the identity of our model. Inscription lower left: "robert- visc hampden- ae suae 70" allows us to date the painting to 1776. Original gilded frame. Rentoiling and restoration of uses.
