Rare early Pirkka chair designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Laukaan Puu, Finland, circa 1955. This is the first production version, manufactured by Laukaan Puu before later production was taken over by Asko and subsequently Artek. Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) was a leading figure of Finnish modernism. He worked early in his career in the Paris studio of Le Corbusier, an influence visible in his functional yet human-centred designs. Tapiovaara is celebrated for furniture that merges modernist principles with Nordic craftsmanship and enduring materials. The chair features a solid pine seat and backrest, combined with black lacquered birch legs, a characteristic contrast that defines Tapiovaara’s iconic Pirkka design. The wood has been treated with linseed oil, giving it a rich, warm colour and enhancing the natural grain. This example is originally branded and marked Laukaan Puu, Finland, Tapiovaara design (see photos), confirming its early manufacture. The joint in the solid pine seat shows some separation, consistent with age and natural wood movement, but the chair remains structurally sound and stable. The chair remains structurally sound and in vintage condition, showing honest signs of use and wear consistent with age, which add to its authentic mid-century character. Dimensions: height 76, 5 X width 43 X depth 43 cm, sitting height 41 cm.
