Portuguese Table with Folding Top in Walnut with Detached Columns and Stretcher

This table features a rectangular walnut top made of two leaves hinged together, with one folding over the other to double the depth when the table is opened. The apron, adorned with two metal button pulls supporting the unfolded top, rests on an original base with solid wood columns paired with detached small columns, connected by a robust H-shaped stretcher close to the ground. This type of folding top table, also known as Italian style, is characteristic of Iberian furniture from the Ancien Régime: the solid walnut, turned columns, and straightforward construction make it a typical piece of domestic architecture from 18th-century Portugal, serving as both a side table and a game or writing table. Condition report: Generally good condition considering its age. Walnut with a deep and rich patina. A character piece, suitable as a console behind a sofa or as a side table in an entrance hall.
