This exceptional piece was handcrafted in the picturesque village of Zabardo, nestled in the Rhodope Mountains (municipality of Chepelare, Smolyan district, Bulgaria), where it was purchased in 1990. The soul of high mountain weaving in a single block: Unlike plain models often assembled from several strips, this large shepherd's rug is rare in that it was woven from a single homogeneous block. It bears witness to the ancestral know-how of the women of Zabardo, who used specific mountain looms to create these heavy pieces designed to insulate interiors from the harsh winters at altitude. Its vibrant vertical stripes (scarlet red, prairie green, deep indigo, golden yellow, and black) give it a striking graphic modernity, akin to an abstract art canvas.
