Ancient baroque coat of arms Pasqui in poplar, Florence, 18th century

Grand baroque coat of arms enclosed in a crumpled frame, made of poplar and painted in polychrome with partial gilding, Florence, early 18th century. The crumpled part is characterised by a symmetrical design composed of volutes in a strong architectural style and is topped with a mask set among leaf-like elements shaped like wings, while the lower part features a laurel garland that, extending from the sides, ultimately serves as a background. Lambrequins, bows with tassels, and a button in the shape of a rosette further adorn the crumpled frame. At the centre, placed within a shield made of volutes, is the insignia of the Pasqui family ("D'azzurro, alla faith di complexion, [...], surmounted by an eight-pointed gold star"), flanked by a red and gold band. Gold is used both to create certain decorations and to define the profile of the scrolls and volutes, contributing to giving the coat of arms a three-dimensional perspective effect (trompe-l'oeil). The Pasqui family is a very old family of Tuscan origin, which has been listed in the records of the Santo Spirito district of Florence since 1200, where it had a stable residence until 1300. It was also registered for Florentine citizenship in 1606.
