He studied at the École Camondo in Paris, but it was later reported that he “learned nothing” there and was guided by his own curiosity. Around 1968, Philippe Starck founded his own studio in Paris, specializing in inflatable designs. He collaborated with the master of inflatable furniture, designer Quasar Khanh. The following year, he debuted an inflatable structure at the Salon de l'Enfant (Children's Fair) and caught the attention of fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who offered him a position as artistic director. In the mid- to late 1970s, Philippe Starck designed nightclubs such as La Main Bleue in Montreuil and Les Bains Douches in Paris. As the 1980s approached, he founded a company called Starck Product, which would later be renamed Ubik after the Philip K. Dick novel. He began producing furniture, lighting, and accessories for manufacturers such as Alessi, Driade, Flos, Kartell, and Vitra. In 1983, Philippe Starck became internationally known after being invited by President François Mitterrand to renovate the private apartments of the Élysée Palace.
