Cake server, Art Nouveau, France, early 20th century

A cake server from the early 20th century, made in France during the late Belle Époque and the beginnings of Art Nouveau. The working part is made of brass, richly engraved with plant and wavy motifs typical of Art Nouveau. The handle, formed from alpaca (a nickel, copper, and zinc alloy also known as 'new silver'), harmoniously combines silvery and golden shades, enriched with relief: beaded borders, medallions, and stylised botanicals. The transition between the server and the handle is accentuated by a decorative floral detail. The proportions are balanced: a wide, slightly wavy server contrasts with a slender, tapering handle. The surface, in a golden-silver tone with a matte, slightly patinated finish, has retained subtle signs of use, such as minor scratches and delicate patina, without damage or visible repairs. Preserved in very good condition, with natural signs of age. This server speaks with the voice of French Art Nouveau, when the art of the table was a daily ritual and every detail testified to the craftsmanship of artisans. Organic lines, fluid motifs, and a gold-silver palette evoke the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century salons, where finesse permeated everyday gestures. The engraved brass and noble texture of the handle tell of times when even simple tools became small works of art, accompanying elegant coffee and dessert gatherings. It can be paired with Art Nouveau porcelain or classic silver cutlery, creating a cohesive setting for festive teas or family gatherings. It also works well as a decorative accent on a buffet or in an antique display, especially in arrangements referencing historical eclecticism or classic elegance.
