Former botanical plank rosier de provins by artist gerard van spaedonck, from the dutch school. The engraving is enhanced. Dimensions: 58x42cm. Painter and miniaturist gerard van spaendonck moved to paris in 1770. In 1780 he was in charge of the king's vellum collection and the teaching of flower painting. He participated regularly in the salon and was received at the royal academy in 1781. Evolving in the entourage of the botanist jacques philippe martin cels, he met pierre-joseph redouté in 1785 to whom he taught watercolour on vellum. In 1793, during the transformation of the king's garden into a museum of natural history, the administrators, of which spaendonck is a member, decided to preserve and continue the king's vellum collection. He himself was appointed "professor of iconography", a position he held until his death in 1822.
