Compotier barbotine (small model diameter 22 cm) of the earthenware of Creil and Montereau motif 'strawberry' stamped LM-Cie Founded in 1797, The Creil fine earthenware factory merged with that of Montereau in 1840 and appeared in 1841 under the name Lebeuf, Milliet et Co., a signature used until 1876. This service chosen by George Sand sand herself, which will give it his name, still adorns the dining table of his house-museum in Rohant. One imagines the romantic dinners bringing together Chopin, Liszt, Delacroix, Balzac or Châteaubriand which evokes the earthenware creil and Montereau in sentimental education. This piece of antiquity has some traces of time, including a sheen under the border, two mini shards on the edge of the compotier (see photos) as well as small defects of enamel in the cooking that do not alter its beauty: the drawings of wild strawberries are intact and the enamel is very white overall, micro scratches only visible very closely in the bottom of the compotier. Barbotine/ Majolica dating back 150 years and more, there have been recent reissues among others by raynaud in 1981: the George Sand service. The painted motifs are in relief but it is fine faience because the shards reveal kaolin, very white, and not a brown earth. Treat yourself to an authentic piece of French romantic history.
