Set of 2 chairs by Niels Otto Møller, model 71, made in Denmark from solid rosewood (Rio or Rosewood depending on the original batch). This model, designed by Niels Otto Møller for his own factory (J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik), is emblematic of Scandinavian design from the 1950s-60s: sculptural backrest in the shape of a "heart" or "butterfly, " clean lines, seat made of Danish cord. Why these chairs are particularly rare: Rosewood is a wood that is now strictly protected. Since 1992, Rio rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) has been listed in Appendix I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), the highest level of protection. Since 2017, the entire genus Dalbergia — thus all rosewoods — has been added to Appendix II, strictly regulating international trade of this wood, even for antique furniture. As a result, the production of new rosewood furniture has nearly disappeared. Vintage pieces like these, made before these restrictions, have thus become true witnesses of a bygone era, highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Scandinavian design. These collectible pieces have been carefully restored: the wood has been cleaned, sanded, and oiled, and each seat has been hand-woven with genuine Danish cord from Randers Reb, offering both comfort and timeless elegance.
