Ancient door from Central India. Many tribes still inhabit states like Orissa, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh today: Santal, Kondh, Muria... On the doors of the homes of these tribes, one usually finds bas-relief carvings, animals, and scenes from daily life. Depending on the tribe, the style of carving may appear more or less primitive. The rosette sculpture is decorative and common on these doors. Each animal has a symbolic meaning: the fish represents fertility, the turtle stability, the tiger courage; however, not all symbols can always be interpreted, as they may also be specific to a family's history. Period: early 20th century. Made of teak wood, this Indian door is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. In the latter case, one should expect the colour to grey over time. The door can be used, for example, as decoration, hung on the wall as a headboard, or above your sofa. Therefore, be mindful of the weight of the door when considering your hanging system.
