This polished aluminium sculpture represents a stylised bear, treated in an abstract and organic manner. It is a creation of the Hoselton Canada studio, an emblematic workshop of Canadian modernist design and craftsmanship active since the late 1960s. Founded by the Hoselton brothers in Ontario, the studio became known for its sculptures made from recycled aluminium, sand-cast and then extensively hand-polished. Their production is distinguished by biomorphic and streamlined forms, often inspired by North American wildlife, emblematic of the modernist aesthetic of the 1970s. This abstract bear, signed Hoselton Canada underneath, perfectly illustrates this formal language: a fluid and compact silhouette, where the animal is suggested rather than described. The material captures light and reveals subtle reflections, enhancing the sculptural presence of the piece.
