1930's modernist lounge chairs with coffee table set by walter schneider and paul hahn for gottwald

A set of modernist tubular cantelivered lounge chairs and coffee table. This particular set was produced in late 1930's by the gottwald company in czechoslovakia. Gottwald gained a licence from thonet to sell chairs similar to thonet's original k 411 armchairs. The letter ‘k’ in this case stands for knoll who collaborated on the design and production of these armchairs at their factory in feurbach. Often this model of cantilevered lounge chair is attributed as a work of dutch designer w.h.gibsen, who actually designed a similar armchair but with differently shaped armrests. The author of these armchairs is walter schneider, with the help from paul hahn. Alongside these beautiful chairs gottwald company offered various coffee tables. The coffee table in this set has a wonderful walnut veneer tabletop with a striking pattern. The simplicity and elegance of its shape together with the beautiful wood makes this table a timeless piece. Both armchairs together with the table are in perfect vintage condition. The wooden armrests have been refurbished by our experienced restorer who specialises in modernist furniture and the steel frames have been cleaned and polished. There is some minimal wear acquired over the years. The original fabric was damaged beyond repair so we have reupholstered both armchairs in a textured fabric made of a combination of wool and linen by kirkby design. We decided to use this material because of its timeless and classic aesthetic as well as the way it offsets the chrome and dark wood armrests. The table has been recently completely refurbished to its former glory. The entire piece has been hand finished by shellac and nitro varnishes in order to achieve a greater gloss finish.
