The Aalto vase is an iconic piece of Finnish design, created by Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino Marsio in 1936. It is also known as the Savoy vase. The Savoy vase was part of a range of furniture created by Alvar and Aino Aalto for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki, which opened in 1937. The Aalto vase was awarded an award in 1936 in a design competition for the iittala glassmaker, who still produces it today. Its design was inspired at Aalto by the folds of a Sámi (Eskimo) woman's leather dress. The design of the vase consisted of a series of pencil drawings on scrap paper, then Aalto created the first prototypes in blown glass using a set of wooden sticks planted in the ground so as to make the vases undulate. shapes of molten glass. The initial manufacture of the vase encountered many difficulties and the original idea of using thin sheet steel molds had to be abandoned in favor of a wooden mold, which gradually burned away. The vase was presented at the 1937 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Its original height was 140 mm. Aalto never won any money with it, because his design belonged to the company iittala for which the competition was organized. The vase is made in many colors, the simplicity of its lines earning it constant success since its creation. The large vase is slightly chipped in 3 places. The little one has 1 place. Deep midnight blue color.
