A large ceramic ashtray in an unusual shape or catchall designed by Roberto Rigon for Bertoncello, dating from the 1970s, featuring an elongated elliptical form and the characteristic Screziato Tabacco glazing associated with the production of the Italian company of that era. The piece has a particularly fluid and aerodynamic silhouette, resembling a small UFO or flying saucer. Its low, elongated body gradually rises on one side, creating an asymmetrical profile with two different heights. Four recessed slots are integrated into the raised sections, allowing it to be used as an ashtray, while its generous proportions also make it well-suited as a catchall or decorative centrepiece. The glazing, known as "Screziato Tabacco," combines tobacco brown, ochre, and golden tones in a softly marbled pattern. Designed by Roberto Rigon, this object is a good example of the sculptural approach found in Bertoncello ceramics during the 1960s and 1970s. The shapes are often very sculptural and geometric, resembling small studies or models for massive modernist sculptures yet to be built. This sculptural quality is enhanced by the use of feet, which elevate the pieces from the surface on which they rest. The present example has this characteristic elevated posture, giving the low and aerodynamic form an almost floating appearance. Bertoncello Ceramiche d'Arte, based in Schiavon in the Veneto region, became known during these decades for its sculptural ceramics, favouring unusual organic and geometric shapes and expressive glazes that highlighted the volume and silhouette of each piece rather than simply decorating the surface. Dimensions: 29 cm long X 20 cm deep X 9.5 cm high at the highest side; 8.5 cm high at the lowest side (11.42 in long X 7.87 in deep X 3.74 in high at the highest side; 3.35 in high at the lowest side).
