Atypical oval portrait of a woman of the bourgeoisie, nobility, with masculine features and build. According to the family legend of her former home (a castle in dauphiné) it would be the chevalier d'éon, charles or charlotte d'éon de beaumont. It would then be a posthumous and inspired work rather than a faithful portrait. The lady wears a flowered headdress on a black lace mantilla that falls on either side of the face on the shoulders and down to the torso. The whole headdress is held by a black velvet ribbon tied in a green ribbon forming a bow tie. The facial features are realistic, expressive. A small cameo as an earring and we can guess a large cameo on the collar behind the green bow. A golden chain of the kind used to hang a pair of glasses or a handheld. Pretty trimming details on the black dress. No visible signature, tiny lack of material, the canvas is not stretched, dirt, no holes, tears or weaknesses, the canvas is not cut, not signed, see photo width: 53 cm height: 64.3 cm thickness: 1.3 cm.
