French Art Deco wrought iron pendant lamp, pressed glass, 1920s-30s
French pendant light – wrought iron with gilt flowers and pressed glass, Art Deco 1920s–30s. An elegant French pendant light from the interwar years, where Art Nouveau and Art Deco meet. The long stem is made of blackened wrought iron with hammered, beaded edges and gilt scrolls; at the top and bottom are clusters of gilt metal flowers with stamens and leaves. Three sweeping, curled arms each carry a dish-shaped shade of pressed, frosted glass (verre pressé moulé) with a pattern of drops and rays, and in the centre hangs a round glass globe with a crisp Art Deco relief. A chandelier with four lights, in the tradition of French wrought-iron and glass lamps by houses such as Degué and Muller Frères. Dimensions: height 80 cm, width (arm to arm) 57 cm. Material: blackened wrought iron, gilt metal flowers and leaves, pressed frosted glass. Style: Art Deco with Art Nouveau influences. Period: c. 1920–1935. Origin: probably France. Number of lights: 4 (three arms and a central globe) Condition: good condition for its age. The wrought iron is sturdy and has a beautiful old patina with light wear to the gilding. On the uppermost flower the gilding has worn through to the white ground layer on a few petals. The glass shades and the central globe are free of chips or cracks; the globe has a few small spots. The glass is unsigned. The wiring has been partly renewed but has not been checked by us; we advise having the lamp inspected by an electrician before use.
