Japan – Meiji Period. A rare and spectacular Japanese bronze from the Meiji period, this planter remarkably embodies the excellence of Japanese decorative arts from the late 19th century. Designed as a true sculpture in its own right, it far exceeds its utilitarian function to assert itself as a decorative collectible work of rare refinement and presence. The decor, with striking naturalism, unfolds an animated lakeside landscape: broad, finely veined aquatic leaves, undulating stems, and relief frogs, modelled with exceptional anatomical precision and a sense of movement. The amphibians seem to emerge from the vegetative surface, frozen in a moment of life, perfectly illustrating the Japanese obsession with observing nature and the living world. This sculptural virtuosity imparts an almost animated quality to the piece, immediately captivating to the eye. The generous, organic shape, reminiscent of a gourd, fits within a pre-Art Nouveau aesthetic, foreshadowing the main lines of Japonisme and European Art Nouveau, where nature becomes the absolute source of artistic inspiration. The neck, subtly highlighted by a finely chiselled geometric frieze, creates an elegant contrast between decorative rigor and the freedom of the naturalistic motif, enhancing the visual balance of the whole. The surface features a sumptuous, deep, and vibrant ancient patina, blending warm browns, chocolate hues, and subtle verdigris reflections, attesting to both the exceptional quality of the bronze and a perfectly mastered aging process. This patina, impossible to reproduce artificially, is one of the most sought-after markers by discerning collectors. The work is signed beneath the base, an essential element attesting to its authenticity and enhancing its heritage interest.
