Mixed clay coupe from Apt – Signed Bernard – Polychrome marbled decoration

Vintage ceramic bowl from Apt. Shades of grey-blue, reddish-brown, cream, and almost black blend into one another. Notably, the marbling is not painted but arises from the mixture of naturally coloured clays, worked into the mass, according to the traditional technique of mixed clays from Apt. Each movement of material thus creates a unique pattern. The surface has a very matte finish, similar to biscuit, which particularly highlights the variations in colour and the texture of the material. The decoration extends to the underside of the bowl. Signature on the underside from the Bernard workshop in Apt, in Vaucluse, known for its work with mixed clays. Attribution to a specific member of the Bernard family remains to be confirmed. Diameter 23 cm, height 4.5 cm. In good vintage condition, this antique piece has a very fine hairline crack running through the edge, which is not very visible but is present (see photos, particularly the last two showing the hairline crack inside and then on the underside). A unique ceramic piece due to its manufacturing technique, mineral hues, and matte surface.
