“Belarti” coffee table, circa 1960/70. Glazed ceramic top. Resting on a chrome-plated metal base. Signature on the top. Traces of rust on the base. Dimensions: h 38.5 l 91 d 46.5 cm. Note a mystery surrounding the name Belarti, some believe that behind this name hides Julien de Covemaeker (Belgian ceramist born in 1927, deceased in 2008), who would have opted for Belarti by contracting the words Belgian and artists, while others attribute this signature to a collective of talented Belgian ceramic artists. It is said that the “j” is that of Julien, but much more often that he would have had the whim to choose “Juliette”… you can therefore find many ads evoking pieces by “Juliette Belarti”. Juliette Belarti, although real in her creations, remains a mystery. And this mystery adds an intriguing dimension to a highly recognizable production. Indeed, Juliette Belarti has no real existence. Yet, her coffee tables, far from being simple pieces of furniture, are the expression of an era, the 1960s and 1970s, and its unique aesthetic. And they quickly became iconic pieces of the period's production. Juliette Belarti's coffee tables are distinguished by their originality and elegance. Each of these functional pieces tells a visual story, captures the essence of the abstract, and invites the observer. The table becomes a focal point, drawing the eye and stimulating the imagination. Whether Juliette Belarti is a person or an artistic entity, the impact of her creations endures and invites future generations to keep track of them.
