Pair of Art Nouveau cast iron headboards, Italy circa 1900

Pair of Italian headboards from the early 20th century, made of cast iron and wrought iron, in Liberty style — the Italian name for Art Nouveau. Each headboard measures 83 × 180 cm. When placed side by side, they form a double headboard of 166 cm: the ideal width for a 160 cm bed. When separated, they can dress two single beds. Sold with their TWO original BED FEET (83 × 112 cm), each featuring a hand-painted medallion and also making very beautiful children's headboards or wall panels. THE DECORATION A rare quality of Japonisme. Openwork castings with flowering branches in high relief; mouldings highlighted with fine iridescent mother-of-pearl marquetry and punctuated with golden chrysanthemum rosettes, the imperial Japanese flower. Trompe-l'œil panels painted to resemble burl wood, plain on the headboards. On the bed feet, a painted medallion: young women in kimonos around a tea table, with a parasol and fan, pine trees and Mount Fuji, a bouquet of irises. CONDITION Item in its original state, never stripped or repainted, having retained all its original surface. Healthy and stable structure, castings without cracks, remarkably complete mother-of-pearl, medallions perfectly legible. Loss of paint and abrasions revealing the gesso, some oxidation spots: wear consistent with age, which is part of the object. The side rails are not provided — unnecessary for use as a headboard, and can be easily made to measure by a metalworker to complete the beds. Price slightly negotiable.
