Superb pair of Napoleon III period candlesticks (second half of the 19th century). A good size (27 cm high), these are distinctive pieces, ideal for adorning a mantelpiece or a festive table. Details and Finishes: Style: Inspired by Louis XVI Neoclassicism, with a base decorated with friezes of palmettes and finely stamped egg-and-dart motifs. The Stem: Exquisite guilloché work with a basketweave pattern (braided crosshatch) that beautifully catches the light. Material: Antique brass with a high copper content, offering a warm, golden hue with lovely copper highlights in places. Condition: Good overall condition. The candlesticks are sold with their antique patina to preserve their authenticity (the brass has not been stripped). Note: Slight traces of oxidation (verdigris) in the recesses that highlight the relief. The neck of one of the candlesticks had a slight deformation which has been straightened; it retains a tiny irregularity that is almost invisible once the candle is in place.
