Ulysse à Blois service in earthenware in Renaissance style, France, 19th century. A magnificent neoclassical (revival) bowl, very colourful in Renaissance style from the famous earthenware factory 'Ulysse à Blois'. It features a salamander with a crown - an allusion to King Francis I (1494-1547), the Renaissance king most closely associated with Blois and the Loire Valley. Blois was one of Francis I's royal residences, and the Château de Blois is also adorned with salamanders. A wonderful decorative bowl that can be used as a display piece, but also as a catch-all or for serving. Excellent condition with a small chip on the back - barely visible from the front. It can be hung or placed.
