Pair of Mundus-Borlo chairs in bent wood with solid backrest – Romania, circa 1920

This pair of Mundus-Borlo chairs made of steam-bent beech is distinguished by its full backrest made from a board with two horizontal crossbars fixed by metal rosettes, and by the round seat with a fan relief. The stamp "MUNDUS-BORLO MADE IN ROMANIA" remains under the seat. Circa 1920. Mundus operated a network of factories across Central Europe to meet the enormous demand for bentwood furniture. The factory in Bârlad, Romania, was one of the most active in the 1910s and 1920s. The original stamp under the seat is a rare mark of provenance and adds documentary value. The base combines steam-bent bars for the legs and side supports with a thin solid board for the backrest, secured by screws protected by small turned rosettes. The seat features an engraved fan pattern, a classic technique that increased grip and decorative effect. Details.
